Electives and Funding Sources

Many different elective opportunities are available at both Boston Children’s Hospital and Boston Medical Center, including experiences in clinical care, research, medical education, clinical outcomes and advocacy.  Outside of the standard elective offerings, residents are able to create their own clinical or non-clinical electives. For example, this past year a senior resident developed a pediatric surgery and critical care elective and another completed an elective with hospital administrators, including the CEO at BMC. Residents can also think outside the walls of the hospital. In 2019, a BCRP senior resident was able to spend an elective month working as an ABC News Med Unit contributor. In addition, residents can select from a variety of international experiences.

Residents may apply to a variety of competitive scholarships to further support their elective and research pursuits.  These awards can be used for project support, international travel for global health work, or conference/travel fees. 

The Departments of Pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital and Boston Medical Center award scholarships for travel to national meetings such as the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Pediatric Academic Societies, the Association of Pediatric Program Directors and meetings of subspecialty societies.
